The Code

A Clown's Code of Conduct for all who accept the title "clown"

There are various versions of The Clown’s Code, A Clown’s Code of Ethics, The Clown’s Commandments. While the words and phrasing may differ, the spirit and intent is basically the same.

As a performing clown, I will always remember that I have been accepted as a member of the clown community to provide my audiences, especially children, with clean clown comedy family style entertainment.

I will always apply my makeup to the BEST of my ability. I will take pride in the appearance of my costume, all accessories and props. I will present myself as a professional at all times.

I will do my very best to maintain the highest clown standards in makeup, costuming, comedy and performance.

I will remember that a great clown entertains others by making fun of himself or herself and never at the expense or embarrassment of others. (Clowns do things FOR people not to people!)

I will keep my routines, act, performance and behavior in good taste whenever I appear as a clown arts entertainer.

I always remain in character while in makeup and costume, though there may be circumstances when it is not possible to do so.

I will not drink any alcoholic beverage nor ingest any illegal substances prior to any clown appearance.

I will not drink alcoholic beverages, consume illegal substances, nor utilize tobacco products any time while presenting myself as a clown.

I will conduct myself as a lady or gentleman at all times.

While appearing in makeup and costume, I will carry out the directives of the producer or his designated deputies. I will abide by all performance rules without complaint.

I will never interfere with other acts, events, spectators, or individuals.

I will appear in as many clown shows as I possibly can.

I will endeavor to put as many smiles as possible on as many people as possible.

I will remove my makeup and change into my street clothes as soon as possible following my appearance, so that I cannot be associated with any incident which may be detrimental to the good name of clowning.
